The father of Elmer Priddy is shown above looking over the midget that his son was killed in shortly after the accident in the fourth heat race at West Side Speedway. 20-year-old Elmer Priddy of Salina, Kansas had only been driving for a couple of weeks and was competing in only the fourth race of his young racing career but he had already developed a bad habit of looking behind him while he was racing. On this evening, veteran driver Ralph Foster had warned Priddy about that saying, “You have already been there! You should be looking where you are going instead!” Priddy was looking behind him again on the final lap of the fourth heat race on this night when his Perry Fuller owned #1 midget side-swiped the midget driven by Bill Brown, ran over a wheel on Brown’s car, and flipped 1½ times. Priddy’s 800-pound midget landed upside down on top of the driver killing him instantly. Elmer Priddy was a younger brother of veteran driver Harold Priddy – Wichita Beacon photo from the Vickey Cummings collection |
*Austin E. Wetzler (1903-1962) of Dallas, Texas raced for many years under the alias “Tex West”. He was also well known by the nickname “Ironhead”.
**LeRoy Dudley “Red” Taylor (1915-1967) is buried in the Indian Hill Cemetery at Chapman, Kansas.
