Bob Lawrence Drove this Chevy in 1975

One of the best races I ever drove was in this #61 Chevy at the Winter Nationals at the Garfield County Fairgrounds in Enid, Oklahoma in October of 1975. I started the B feature that day on the inside of the 11^th row (in 21^st position) and worked my way through the field to finish third.

Ralph Henderson of Mulvane, Kansas had started that race right behind me on the inside of the 12^th row (in 23^rd position) and followed me in his #99 Chevy through the traffic to finish in fourth place. Observers said that every pass I made, Henderson followed and stayed right behind me to the end of the race. The two cars looked as though they were almost hooked together for the entire race.

The first four finishers in the B feature were to transfer to the A feature but the engine blew in this Chevy while going down the back straight-away on the last lap of the B feature and I was unable to start the A feature. #0 Vern Allen had finished in fifth place in the B feature which made him the first alternate starter in the A feature and he was able to start in my stead.

I also drove this car during most of the summer racing season at “81” Speedway north of Wichita, Kansas in 1975. The car was owned by Jack Shipman of Wichita, Kansas and sponsored by Mid-Kansas Paving also of Wichita. Although the car appears to be a 1956 model, it was actually a 1955 Chevrolet chassis with 1956 Chevy sheet metal.

The car just in front and on the outside in the photo above (taken by Mike Cornelison at “81” Speedway) is the #74 Chevrolet driven by future points champion Dane Shockey.

Below are the final points standings for the semi-late model stock cars at “81” Speedway in 1975. I finished the season in 23^rd place that year.
