Jalopy Stock Car Races
Grant County Fairgrounds
Ulysses, Kansas
Monday – July 4, 1955
Afternoon Program
Sponsor – Charles B. Hart American Legion Post 379
Races Sanctioned by – Grant County Racing Association
Race Director – Ernest Mann of Ulysses, Kansas
Two complete racing programs were run on this date. The first was run in the afternoon and then everybody (spectators and competitors) came back and raced again that night. Hot winds are credited with keeping the size of the crowds small.
Calvin Christiansen of Ulysses suffered some cuts on his head and the loss of some teeth when he rolled his car in the north turn landing upside down. It is not known if this happened during the afternoon races or during the nighttime program.
Although a full racing program was run in the afternoon, all we know about any of these races (except the A feature) is that Clarence “Nut” Cokeley of Liberal, Kansas is one of the drivers that competed in them but he did not place.
