The photo at right was taken just after A. J. Shepherd hooked a rut and snap rolled the #6 Bell Lines dirt champ car during time trials on September 16, 1961 for the Hoosier “100” USAC Champ Car race on the one-mile dirt racetrack at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The photo below was taken just seconds later.  Shepherd appears here to be reaching for the safety of a tree limb.  Seconds after this picture was taken, Shepherd was thrown from the car.  Both he and the car cleared the guardrail and crashed through the wall of a barn outside the racetrack.  Shepherd suffered critical injuries in this accident and was in a coma for several weeks.  This accident ended his racing career.
