Carl H. Mayfield was born on February 2, 1898 either at Chetopa, Kansas or in Indian Territory (Oklahoma), depending on which source is accurate. He moved to Kansas as a small boy and grew up to be an automobile mechanic. He built his first Mayfield Special in the late 1920s and campaigned in on racetracks across the Midwest, ocasionally sharing the driving duties with Leech and Happy Fox of Kansas City, Missouri, and with A. H. Kilgore of Salina, Kansas. Mayfield’s racing career continued into the late 1930s.
Mayfield moved to Denver, Colorado where he passed away in February of 1968.
