Oaleyan Winner in Final Races

Oakley driver Dennis Scheetz Sunday won two firsts in the final jalopy races of the season here.  Scheetz won the slow heat preliminaries and the feature race in that category.

Sunday night at WaKeeney he placed 2nd and 4th in the same two events.

There was an excellent turnout of cars, some 15, at the races Sunday sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, but there was only a fair sized crowd.

Rails lined up for the rail heat race.  That is #32 K. O. Christian in his Hudson powered rail farthest from the camera at left.  The #94 straight-eight Buick powered rail driven by Bill Nelson and owned by Jim McMillan of Wichita can just be seen lined up to K. O. Christian’s right.  The #24 in front was driven by Paul Befort, Jr. of Garden City, Kansas - Cokeley collection

Jalopies preparing for the slow heat race on this day at Oakley.  #69 Andy McKinley is lined up farthest from the camera at right.  The #43 driven by Cole Young is to McKinley's right.  The #1 driven by Dennis Scheetz is lined up farthest from the camera at left and the #16 driven by Joe Cathron can just be seen to Scheetz's right - Cokeley collection

Jalopies lined up for the slow heat race on this day at Oakley.  The #31F at left is a 1931 Modal A Ford coupe that was owned by Bob Buchholz and probably driven by Alvin Dietz*  The car directly in front of #31F is the #1 driven by Dennis Scheetz.  The car to Scheetz’s right is car #16.  The bumper just visible at the far right of this picture belongs to car #69 driven by Andy McKinley - Cokeley collection

Jalopies lined up for the fast heat race on this day at Oakley.  That is #97 Howard Cochran (farthest from camera) and #5 John Small on the front row at right.  The Jalopies of #18 Don Smith (farthest from the camera) and #21 Gene Coffman make up the second row at left.  Cochran’s car and Coffman’s car were both owned by Bob Lorenz of WaKeeney, Kansas - Cokeley collection

Jalopies lined up for the fast heat race on this day at Oakley.  That is #18 Don Smith (farthest from the camera) and #21 Gene Coffman at right.  The jalopies of #7 Nut Cokeley (farthest from the camera) and #1B Homer Macklin make up the back row at left - Cokeley collection

Jalopy #7 driven by Clarence “Nut” Cokeley is shown here parked on the racetrack in front of the grandstands after Cokeley won the Jalopy trophy dash - Cokeley collection

After K. O. Christian had set quick time in time trials, won the heat, trophy dash, and “A” feature, a crowd gathered around to see what made that Hudson go so fast – Coffman collection

The races were over and car owner Bob Lorenz had his #21 jalopy loaded up and ready for the trip back to WaKeeney.  All that was left was to be done pick up the day’s winnings – Coffman collection

Race officials distribute the winnings in the infield of the racetrack.  The only person to be identified so far in this photo is Gene Coffman wearing the white pants and dark shirt standing in back of the official in the stripped shirt.  You can see the number 2 on the back of Coffman’s shirt.  If you could see it all, the whole number was 21 – Coffman collection

* Car #31F was owned by Bob Buchholz of Wakeeney, Kansas and one source states that he was the driver on this day too while another source states that the driver was Alvin Dietz of WaKeeney instead.

** Sources disagree on who was driving the #16 car on this date.  One says it was Joe Cathron while another says the driver was Joe Casselin (also found spelled “Caslin”) of Wilsonville, Nebraska.
