Jalopy and Rail Races

Sportsman Park - Oakley, Kansas

Sunday Afternoon - September 17, 1961

Clarence “Nut” Cokeley of Liberal, Kansas, seated in the white rail at left, raced both of these cars at Oakley on this day.

The white rail with black trim was owned by Cliff Durr of Derby, Kansas.

The #7 jalopy at right was owned by Bob Lorenz of WaKeeney, Kansas who is seated in that car.  It was painted red and trimmed in white.

The white jalopy coupe #75 in the background at left was driven by Ed Whitney of Almena, Kansas.  Note the Pennzoil can on the roof of that car.  It was secured to the roof of the car with screws as a joke and many an unsuspecting pit crewman had reached to remove it from the top of the car as it was leaving the pits.  None were successful.
