Champions of the Hutchinson Nationals

The Hutchinson Nationals can be traced to 1956 and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma where Ray Lavely, then the race promoter at Taft Stadium, conceived the Grand National Jalopy Championship Races.  Jalopy racing, in general, had reached its height in popularity among the fans nationwide in 1956.  Lavely convinced five other promoters to join his venture.  Those were: Jim Collins of Salt Hawk Speedway at Hutchinson, Kansas; Jack Merrick of McCarty Speedway in Dodge City, Kansas; O. L. Douglas of 81 Speedway at Wichita, Kansas; Eber Higgins and Verne Hamilton who were the promoters of the Garfield County Fairgrounds in Enid, Oklahoma.  The first Nationals were held at Taft Stadium on October 5, 1957.  When the first Nationals were over, Lavely retired from promoting races and moved first to Denver before moving on to California where he passed away in 1980.
