            Lentz led for the entire distance.  Williamson was running a close second to Lentz when he dropped out with a burned clutch.  Bryant’s Hudson Special was forced out of the race with a broke a valve spring.  The other four cars had dropped out before six laps could be completed.

            Morean lost time against a strong south wind.  He lost more time on one lap when, unable to cut the north turn sharp enough, he had to fly behind the grandstands.  Morean also flew his airplane while Gerald Rexroad did wing-walking stunts between races.

This photo was taken at an automobile race at the Kansas State Fairgrounds on a non-state fair date (known as a “still date”) in the early 1920s.  Note that the racetrack has been packed down rather than being prepared soft as it would be for horse racing.  Also note the racing car sitting at the far left end of the line of cars closest to the camera – Franz photo from the Reno County Museum

* Peter “Pete” Grandon (1888 – 1981)

** Clyde Grandon (1901 - 1967)

*** John Mais (1888-1961) was also entered in a race on this same date at the West Side Racetrack in Wichita, Kansas but his name does not appear in the published results of the races run either place so it really is not known where, of if, he even competed that day.
