Although actual times have only been located for the fastest 15 cars, the list above shows the order of the first 80 cars after time trials.  In all, 87 of the 125 cars that ran this day are known.

The car numbers listed above are the numbers that were on the cars when they ran time trials and before those numbers were replaced with the paper numbers reflecting their starting order from time trials.  The cars were issued numbers on sticky backed paper that corresponded with the position that each timed in up through the fastest 99 cars.  Charlie Pitts timed in 100th fastest in time trials so the digit one was deleted and his car was renumbered “00” for the races the following day.  The cars that timed in places 101 through 125 were each issued a sticky backed paper letter.  Thus, the 101st fastest car was issued an “A” while the 125th fastest car was issued sticky paper with the letter “Y”.  The cars that were issued the letters were designated as alternates and when a numbered car dropped out of competition, the car with the next letter took that car’s place in the race lineup.

#15 Dean Caldwell of Sublette, Kansas is shown here at left lined up to get into the pits this morning to prepare for time trials.  His car was owned by Carl Caldwell.  Car #39 in the center of the picture was driven by Todd White of Hutchinson – Cokeley collection

The Merle Trahern owned #7 Ford driven by Clarence “Nut” Cokeley of Liberal, Kansas is shown here at the registration table in the pits off of the back straightaway at Hutchinson being signed in for time trials on this day – Coffman collection

This photo was taken during a practice session on this Saturday afternoon.  Car number #73 at left was driven by Paul Befort, Jr. of Garden City, Kansas – Todd White collection

#87 Gordon Dodson of Wichita taking his time trail.  The hole in the fence was the result of an early mishap that day when #88 Bill Wilson of Salina spun out and crashed through the fence during his time trial - 1960 Merrick Nationals Program

#96 John Riead of Hutchinson is shown here taking starter Ted Davis’ checkered flag at the conclusion of his second consecutive lap of time trials – Cokeley collection

This is a computer scan of the actual copper wire and lead seal that track officials placed in Nut Cokeley’s gas tank before time trials this day.  Click your mouse on the wire above to see a photo of Merrick race official Johnny Alsdurf attaching this wire to the gas tank on Nut Cokeley’s jalopy – Cokeley collection

Max Madison a.k.a. “Peanuts the Clown” had gone out during a break in time trials to entertain the crowd when his King midget developed trouble.  Here, several including Nut Cokeley had gathered around to lend a helping hand.  Click your mouse on the photo for a better look at Peanut’s King midget – Cokeley collection

Gene Coffman’s pit pass for this day of time trials.  Coffman’s car was not entered but he served as a member of car owner Merle Trahern’s pit crew – Coffman collection

1 Kenneth Ovid “K. O.” Christian (1914-1961) was fatally injured in a racing accident at Wichita, Kansas.

2 There was no 13th position so the numbers skipped from 12th to 14th.

3 Paper numbers were applied to the cars after time trials corresponding with the place that each car timed in that day.
