On the Historic Half-mile Racetrack at the

Kansas State Fairgrounds

 Hutchinson, Kansas

Friday, September 23, 1921

“Close to 15,000 people witnessed these races.  The immense throng overflowed from the big grandstand to the center of the racetrack and filled every bit of space along the outside stretches as a testimony that the people of Kansas love auto racing.”

Bill Bryant had led for more than half of this race when Leon Duray moved up from third place to take the lead with just two laps remaining.  Lentz was only 40 feet out of the lead at the finish as the front four cars crossed the finish line very close together.

Leon Duray had his name legally changed to “Leon Duray” from George Stewart.

Both Leon Duray (1894-1956) and Fred Lecklider (1895-1964) have competed in the Indianapolis “500”.

* Arlo Lyle “Al” Waters (1893-1925) was fatally injured in a racing accident in Detroit, Michigan.
