                Pifer led the first 9 laps before McWithey passed him.  Two laps later, Pifer regained the lead and held it to the end although he only managed to edge out McWithey by one car length.

                Amick was driving a car owned by Tom Cherry (1911-1990) of Muncie, Indiana.

* It is not known why Dave Carter (1928-1955) of Stockton, California raced under the alias “Willie Thompson from Mill Valley, California” when he competed in these races.

 

** Frank William Heaton (1925-1954) was fatally injured in a racing accident at Tulsa, Oklahoma just 16 days after these races at Hutchinson.

 

*** Richard “Red” Amick (1929-1995) went on to compete in the Indianapolis “500” in 1959 and 1960.
