Hellmueller was challenging Collins for the lead on the fifth lap when he struck a large hole in the south turn of the racetrack. Hellmueller’s car bounced high into the air while Collins pulled away to a 100 yard lead. Hellmueller’s car hit the same hole on the next lap causing it to slide wide just grazing the outside fence. By the end of the race, Hellmueller had closed the gap between himself and Collins to just 50 yards. Cotter finished third but a quarter a mile behind Hellmueller.
