Each of these cars and their drivers were from Newton, Kansas.  #22 was driven by Gaylon Albright, #2 was driven either by Clyde Havens or Gerald “Skeeter” McKinnie, and #94 was driven by Doyle “Shot” Hampton.  This photo was taken on this day on the front straight-away at Hutchinson, Kansas – Albright collection

 

 

 

Bill Mears of Wichita, Kansas receiving his trophy for winning the trophy dash on this afternoon.  The man at left just in back but on the other side of the car is Vester VanSickle of Hutchinson.  The man, whose head can be seen just to the right of Bill Mears, is Johnnie Goertz of Newton, Kansas who owned car #86.  The flagman is Ted Davis of Junction City, Kansas and the man standing at the far right up in the tower is Jim Collins of Hutchinson.  The man that can be seen just to the right of Ted Davis, is Bob Champlin of Newton, Kansas – Tom Kelso photo from the Jim Kelso collection

Third Heat Race

                Buddy Carroll of Wichita, Kansas crossed the finish line first in this race but his car was protested by a competitor claiming that all of the parts were not stock.  After the races, Carroll declined to tear his engine down so he was disqualified from all of the races that he had competed in on this day.  The second place finisher in this heat race would have become the victor but his name has not been learned.

It is unknown what, if any, connection there was between the first place and the thirteenth place finishers.

John Marshall plowed through the outside fence at the northeast corner of the racetrack.

Don Shepherd’s car bumped into the outside fence on the north curve, lost a wheel, and turned over.  He was treated for facial injuries.
