The Cowley County Fairgrounds at Winfield, Kansas lies on the east bank of the Walnut River and is outside the levee protecting the city of Winfield from flooding.  The racetrack itself is only a couple hundred yards east of the river and floods often.  The racetrack was under about five feet of water when these photographs were taken in 1961.  Above, the photographer was looking to the southwest from his vantage point on top of the dike.   The photo below was taken from about one hundred yards north of the number four (northwest) corner of the racetrack.  When the water receded from this flood, a gravel bar was left behind on the racetrack, right in front of the grandstand - Bob Lawrence photos
