| Winfield Daily Courier Monday, July 31, 1933 - Page 8: Thrills In Auto Races One Driver Unhurt When Car Crashes Through Fence at Turn |
| There was a thrill in every event of the auto races at the fairgrounds Saturday, but the two biggest thrills came when Earl Murray, of Hutchinson (Kansas), crashed through the fence and when Posey Reeves, of Oklahoma City, drove his machine at top speed through the blazing wood panel in front of the grandstand. Murray left the track on the first lap of the Class A race. He was just rounding the curve on the north end of the east side (turn 3) of the oval when his machine skidded and ripped out several feet of the wood fence. The machine lost a wheel but Murray was not scratched. He was eliminated from any further competition. Time Trials - 5 cars - 1 lap on the half-mile racetrack: |

A fitting
conclusion to the racing program was brought to the fans by (Posey)
Reeves when he drove his Fronty through the burning panel. Fire
brands were hurled in every direction when the speeding car crashed
through the wall of fire.
Earl Murray's name was actually Murray Earl. Return to page one of the History of Auto Racing at Winfield website. |
