Semi-late model stock car races are coming to the Winfield fairgrounds racetrack this Sunday at 2 p.m. Approximately 40 cars are entered in the races. Winners will be picked from three heats, a trophy dash, consolation races, and the "A" feature, a 20-lap affair. The semi-late model stock car includes cars made from 1954 to 1961*.
Several drivers are entered in the races, Lou Steward, Kenny Moore, and Wayne Wilt will all be competing from Winfield, while Bob Lawrence, Bud Haehn, and Mel Montgomery will all be down from Wichita's big "81" Speedway. Bud Haehn and Mel Montgomery are favored in the races and both are in a points battle at the "81" Speedway.
*The rules were loosely enforced at Winfield, to say the least, and inclusive models were actually 1949-1970 as no car was turned away because it was too new to race there.

This photo appeared in the Winfield Daily Courier on Monday, July 13, 1970 with the following caption:
"THREE TIME WINNER - Pinky Mullens won all three races he competed in at the stock car races held at the fairgrounds yesterday. Mullens won the first heat, the trophy dash, and the 'A' feature. This picture shows the cars going around the northwest curve (fourth turn) at the fairgrounds track."
The car in front at right is the 1957 Chevrolet #02 of Pinky Mullens from Wichita and the fourth car in line is the 1956 Chevrolet #11 of Bud Haehn also of Wichita. The above caption is all that the newspaper printed about the races that day. Note the steel pipe guard railing around the outside of the racetrack.
The following results are taken from the official score sheets that were signed by head scorer, Ann Alexander. The score sheets only listed the car numbers so the driver names have been added. Entrants that appear in blue were not running at the finish.

Pole sitter Bud Haehn spun out on the original start of the trophy dash and had to go to the rear of the field for the restart. That moved the starting spot of each of the other cars up one place for the restart.
