Arkansas City Speedway a.k.a. West Madison Speedway

This aerial photo was taken on August 31, 1938 and shows the decaying speedway in the center of the picture.  It was located on the north side of Madison Ave. (U. S. Highway 166) 1˝ miles west of U. S. Highway 77 at the west edge of Arkansas City, KS.  The grandstand was gone by the time this photo was taken but it had been located along the west (left) straightaway.  The Kansas City and Southwestern Railroad track passed by the northeast corner of the speedway.  Today, the property belongs to the City of Arkansas City and is where the that city’s water wells are located.  Click your mouse on the photo to see a closeup of the speedway – Photo from the Bob Lawrence collection
